Halftone by truemarmalade Halftone by truemarmalade
So the wait is over. I've finally finished this stencil that's been owning my life for the past few weeks. I think it was worth it though.

4275 squares. I cut it out twice since my method of making stencils forces me to do twice the work, but it lets me make sure everything is perfect by the end. So that's actually 8550 squares that are all about half a centimeter wide.

I took this picture (which was taken by ~Frozen-in-time1) and used photoshop to make the halftone filter. I think it was 700 dpi, 20 frequency, and squares. It's A3 sized, printed off on 4 A4 sheets and taped together.

Here's some detail shots, since it may be hard to believe this is actually a stencil.

one
two
three

and a far away shot so you can see the halftone effect as it's intended to be seen. It helps to close your eyes til your lashes blur your vision, or step back from your monitor a few feet.

My next stencil is also going to be a halftone, and I think this is the start of a new addiction for me. I hope I won't bore you with these thousands of little squares. I'm sure I'll take breaks for normal stencils somewhere in between.

Please let me know what you think of this stencil. In my opinion, it's my all time best; but I could be biased on how much work I've put into it.

it sounds stupid but you can get a thing called a rastorbater and it cuts out all the work out and it just prints off :)
you can get decent programmes to do it and it cuts out a hell of a lot of hassle :)

Many people have suggested this to me and it's actually a completely different process and gives a different result.

And anyway, anyone can just print something off and tape it together real big on a wall. It's a bit more important when I spend the time to stencil it myself.

amazing - really, great work!
can't believe it :/.
I might try doing something like that too.

one question, when you taped those 4 sheets together - did you put them on a thicker paper or something like that?

It's not a filter, you need to make the image format a bmp and then choose halftone mode when you do that

Amazing stuff mate. Why did you use a frequency of 20 instead of 1?
Reply
:icontruemarmalade:
truemarmalade Featured By Owner Mar 15, 2008
Because if it was a frequency of 1, then there would be 20th the amount of squares, and it wouldn't look like a picture at all.

Awesome work! The level of details on this is amazing... and inspiring. :D
My guess is that first you edited the photo digitally, and printed it out, then cut, and spray. Am I right?

Doesn't work as well, and I can't tweak the settings as much as I can when I do it with photoshop.

Acetate is the US name for the clear plastic stuff. I've used that a couple times but prefer posterboard, which is like really thin cardboard.

witch photoshop u used? i mean i've got CS2 and i really don know how to make squares

:icontruemarmalade:

I used cs2 to do this. If you go image > mode > bitmap > halftone screen > change the shape to squares; then it'll give you this effect.

woooooo!! Did the making of this stencil ever make you frustrated man? I know I'd go insane cutting 8550 0.5cm wide squares.

It didn't really make me frustrated ever, just impatient. It's an easy stencil to cut but took a long time.
